This isn't a race car. It isn't a street rod. It's a Hot Rod.
By that, I mean the powertrain was not built with racing in mind. Yet the styling is more correct for a late 60's traditional hot rod. In my opinion, a street rod is 90's styling. This certainly isn't that.
The engine is a 60 over 454. That equals 468. It was built by a reknowned NASCAR engine builder from North Carolina. It runs about 9:1 compression and was built to create torque on pump gas. Dual 500 cfm Carters flow the mixture through a tall tunnel ram. Big tube fenderwell headers vent the combusted leftovers. Three inch pipe and shorty Flowmasters take it to the rear.
This engine runs a mechanical fuel pump, a mechanical water pump with fan attached and an Accell point style distributor. The cam is a hydraulic Comp 292 with roller rockers and Pete Jackson gear drive. The engine has been balanced.
The transmission is a M22 with high tower Hurst shifter. The rear end is a 12 bolt GM with 308 gears, 30 spline axles and Auburn posi unit. Perfect for crusing the freeway. My calculations say you will run 2220 rpm @ 60 mph and just under 2800 @ 75 mph. This car was built to cruise. The 275/60/15 radials are mounted on some Fenton Hustler III wheels.
The front is the original Willys axle with a disc brake kit. It has heavy leaf spring and tube shocks. The steering is still the original box! The wheels are gray center American five spokes with radial tires.
The frame is the original frame. It was boxed. The rear suspension is ladder bar with coilover shocks. The rear drum brakes were rebuilt.
Some modifications were performed. The radiator is a custom built Griffin Aluminum. The gas tank is custom built of aluminum. The inner fenders were cut for the headers. The rear fenders were radiused for tire clearance. Viewed: 521 times.

The rest is pretty much stock. This old car was always in North Carolina. It has very little rust and the repairs were minimal. The floor and trunk are original. The outer rockers were replaced. The floor was modified for clearance and the shifter. The dual master cylinder is now mounted on the original firewall. The cowl vent is original and functional, as are the vaccuum wipers.
The interior is tastefully done. The seat is of a 40 Ford. It and the door panels are done in pleated naugahyde. The black loop carpet looks nice. The headliner and original visors are done in egg shell white.
All the interior trim, knobs, handles and garnish mouldings are very nice. The door locks work and the passenger side locks with the key, as does the trunk. An after market heater and some auxilliary gauges are nice additions. The pedals are from a Cutlass. The tilt column is early Cadillac. The flaked steering wheel looks perfect...and the horn blows by the button.
There are many, many original pieces on this hotrod. Keep in mind it was original when the build was started eight years ago. The head light and tail light lens are original, the grill and hood ornament are original. The stainless trim is original. I love the original licence plate bracket and working light. You have to see it to believe it.
The body was straightened, repaired and refinished with a urethane finish. It is attractive and is very show like. This car has been driven so there are minute flaws, but it still looks fabulous. The welting is all in place. The doors shut nice. The alignment is good.
The glass and rubbers were all replaced with new. The headlights were converted to sealed beam and directional/marker lights added. This car has working turn signals and hazard lights.
The originality caught my attention. The interior made me interested. The overall "hotrod" styling made it impossible for me to resist. In my opinion, this is a great Hot Rod Willys. Viewed: 399 times.
