1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442/W30 Tribute Coupe

First off, this is NOT a 442, nor is it a documented W30. It is a great tribute that will perform at a very high level and impress at any local car show.

This car belonged to the son of a long-time Oldsmobile collector. Dad just passed two months ago and the son inherited his collection of outstanding and rare Oldsmobiles. Due to space constraints, he had to sell the car that he loved the most.

He had owned this car in excess of 20 years. It was his first car and the car that he drove in high school. There were a lot of memories made with this car, some of which we won’t mention. But the memories that are the most meaningful were those made with his father. They worked side-by-side to make this car a great driver. They showed their cars together. It was very, very emotional for this car to be sold. After over 20 years of consistent improvement and enjoyment, it was like family.

This car was born as a Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe. It has always been Saffron Yellow and was repainted in the 80’s. The factory installed black vinyl top still looks great. It was born with a black vinyl bucket seat interior, just like you see it today. It was also born with the floor shifter and factory seat belts.

Over the years, the interior was redone, a tilt steering column was installed, a rare radio delete plate was installed, the shift indicator was changed to reflect the overdrive and a small tachometer was neatly placed in the dash.

The engine is a rebuilt E-code 400. When they rebuilt it, they built it to W30 specs. They decided to top it with a Holley fuel injection system. This system is tuned and adjusted with the included laptop computer and can be monitored by the underdash screen.

To feed the Holley, the fuel tank was replaced and an electric high pressure pump installed. All fuel lines were replaced with stainless steel. This system in now capable of running any fuel that you choose to tune for. We are now experimenting with a 50/50 blend of 87 pump gas and E85. In theory, this will fit the current tune. Nicer weather will allow for testing.

The exhaust flows through an over-sized true dual system, with H-pipe and full length tailpipes. Flowmaster 50 mufflers offer a pleasing tone.

The transmission is now a Bowtie Overdrive built 200r4. It shifts very crisply and truly enhances the driving experience. The driveshaft was custom built and it joins the transmission to a Ford 9 inch rear end containing 3.70 gears.

The suspension is by Global West. Both the front and rear have been completely transformed. This includes Koni adjustable shocks, Hotchkiss springs and oversized sway bars. The brakes are now disc all the way around, with 12 inch on front and 11 inch on the rear. The rotors are drilled and slotted. There is a power boosted dual master cylinder that feeds a proportioning valve.

The wheels are Torque Thrust II in 16×8. The tires are radials by BFGoodrich G-Force Sport. The rear tires don’t stand a chance of hooking up the power, but are designed for highway cruising. One finger can steer this car due to power steering.

The 442 emblems enhance the appearance of the car. The W30 components enhance both the appearance and the performance. In addition to the engine being built to W30 specs, it is topped with a real W30 air cleaner that is fed by ducting from a real W30 radiator support that holds real W30 air scoops. The hood is a real louvered W30 hood. The radiator is a proper 4 core version for exceptional cooling. As per W30 configuration, the battery is located in the truck.

This car has never been rusty. I find no patch panels or body filler. We know the paint is very old and it shows plenty of knicks and scrapes that were touched up. But there is no sign of rust or repairs. The underside is very solid with no repairs to the floors or trunk floor.

This car has been driven and improved for over 20 years. It was only enjoyed during nice weather, but was driven as frequently as possible. All improvements were made to improve the enjoyment and experience. Lots of love was given.

The previous owner and I both hope the next owner will offer this car as much love as he did. There is not much more you can do, other than a repaint, besides keeping the gas tank full and your arm out the window. Drive it and enjoy!
