This is a rare car. It is certainly unique. It is in great original condition. For all of those reasons, it attracted my attention and it had to be purchased.
This car was built in San Jose, CA. It is of very low production, as only 8757 were built throughout the US in 1956. This car spent most of its life as a Flower Car for a funeral home near Omaha, NE.
It was born with the 272 cubic inch Y-Block V8 that currently resides in the engine bay. It has a 2 barrel carburetor. A great feature is the overdrive option attached to the three speed manual transmission. 1956 was the first year that Fords had a 12 volt electrical system.
These cars seldom had many options. This car has the deluxe heater, but no radio. It has the optional full width bench seat. Both doors lock with the key. There is only one visor. I believe the bumper guards are original and installed at the factory.
I have no way to determine if the dual outside mirrors were factory installed. I have been told that the steering wheel is one from a car, which is more ornate than the truck-style wheel it was born with. The wheel covers are now from a car instead of a truck. The tail lights have been switched to the style from a car. The exhaust system is now dual and exits all the way out the rear. Radial tires with wide whitewalls have replaced the bias ply tires. I bet the originals were blackwall tires.
This car is very, very original. The Raven Black paint is mostly original with the exception of a few touch-ups and a small repair. It shines up nicely, but has plenty of flaws. Call it patina if you wish. They are only original once and you can see how straight the body is. You can see it has never been rusty.
It is simply amazing underneath. It appears to have been undercoated when new. There is not a speck of surface rust. The inner rockers, floor supports and tailpan are all in perfect condition. The floors are as good as new. I have never seen a Ford of this era in such great condition underneath.
The glass is Ford script original glass. The trim and chrome appear to be original. The door panels and headliner are original. The floor mats have been replaced. The seat has been reupholstered to the original style Dark Brown Vinyl.
This car has been driven just over 87000 miles. It has been wonderfully maintained. First by the funeral home. You can bet it was kept in a garage, washed frequently and probably waxed for proper appearance during a funeral. Since then, it has been a very collectible car. It not only looks great, but it starts and runs like a top! The engine bay is original and pleasing to the eye.
All features on this car function properly. The key locks both doors. There are two keys. There is a jack and a spare with radial tire. There is an Owner’s Manual. There is a tool box full of spare parts, etc. Perfect for road-side emergency repairs.
I love the rarity of the sedan delivery. The condition of the car is amazing. The combination of the V8 engine with overdrive transmission suits me just fine. And what is not to like about a low mile car that still wears its original black paint? This is a great car that deserves to be shown, driven and well-cared-for.
